Veterans’ families at the come-and-try day at Mildura Martial Arts.
KIDS got an insight into self-defence when Mildura Martial Arts hosted a free open day for families of Mildura RSL Sub Branch veterans.
Almost 20 kids attended the event and took part in a number of drills, learning important self-defence techniques in a fun and exciting way.
Kids learnt the basics of striking and grappling as well as how to get away from someone who has grabbed them.
The event was organised by the sub branch, which hosts weekly events to support local veteran-owned businesses in the region.
Mildura Martial Arts owner Sophie Moloney hailed the open day a success.
“It was awesome, everyone seemed to have a good time,” she said. “It was a lot of fun and they got to experience martial arts.
“We are already talking about having another event for the RSL because they loved it so much and we’ve had a couple of kids express interest in coming along and joining up, which is great.”
Coach Mick Moloney said the day served a dual purpose.
“I think it is important to get kids involved in martial arts because as a by-product of martial arts they learn discipline, they strive for better things, they aren’t content with the ordinary and it gives them a drive for life.
“I also think it is important to support veteran-owned businesses. Veterans give a lot to their country and when people support these businesses they give back to the people who defended them.”
