THE Mildura RSL has made a $100,000 donation to support Australia’s first accommodation centre for veterans who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness.
Ex-service accommodation providers Vasey RSL Care opened the doors of The V Centre – Veteran Empowerment Program, in Melbourne last month.
Similar to a boarding house or transitional housing, the V Centre can accept veterans from anywhere, and provide them with wraparound support services.
Mildura RSL general manager Kim Archibald said they jumped at the opportunity to be a part of championing this program.
“This is a vital part of our role as an RSL sub-branch,” Mr Archibald said.
“Our veterans deserve the fundamental security of having a roof over their heads.
“Accommodation is a basic need, and we should spare no effort in ensuring that those who risked their lives for our freedom are provided for.”
The 2023 Rental Affordability Index noted that vulnerable Australians are paying up to 75 per cent of their income towards accommodation costs.
It is estimated that of the 6000 people who leave the Australian Defence Forces every year, 300 fall into homelessness, and the rate of homelessness among military veterans is almost three times higher than the general population.
The funding from Mildura RSL has been allocated towards essential expenses at The V Centre, including outfitting the gym and art therapy facilities.
“Mildura RSL has a commendable history of supporting vulnerable veterans, and this $100,000 donation highlights their commitment to making an impact in the lives of those who have served our nation,” Vasey RSL Care chief executive officer Janna Voloshin said.
Vasey RSL Care general manager of veteran services Chris Gray echoed the appreciation for the donation.
“Their support is instrumental in advancing our mission to combat veteran homelessness,” Mr Gray said.
“In the face of the current national housing crisis, it is heartening to see organisations like Mildura RSL stepping up to make a real difference.”
Vasey RSL Care and the Mildura RSL are encouraging other organisations and the community at large to join forces in supporting initiatives that address the critical issue of veteran homelessness.
